Bill Doerrfeld’s second album “A Passing Moment” was just reviewed at @CriticalJazz and is posted online here. Highlights include the following:

The sophomore release from the prolific Bill Doerrfeld is eclectic, wide ranging with a stylistic feel that is incredibly contemporary while infusing such sub genres as boogie-woogie into his sonic play book.

Genre, sub genre, style are seemingly of little interest to Doerrfeld who is simply an artist displaying the end result of his own sonic exploratory no matter where that may lead.

Doerrfeld may be a record label and critics worst nightmare as his incredible talent is not easily tagged into one comfortable niche. From a purely artistic standpoint Doerrfeld’s music makes you think about music and nothing else. A tremendously gifted artist whose talent stands any musical test thrust upon it. Well worth a listen!

“Doerrfeld is a gifted pianist with a very specific artistic vision.”

“Doerrfeld may be somewhat new to the scene in terms of recognition but a musical voice that is visionary, futuristic but firmly grounded. An artist that displays the utmost respect for the genres he draws from as well as the product he presents. A sonic bi-product of his own making and a name to remember. A new-age Keith Jarrett? Maybe…An exciting new voice in the field of solo piano recordings? Yes!”

“A virtuoso experience well worth a listen.”

The album features 10 original solo piano compositions ranging in styles from virtuosic up-tempo Latin, R&B, boogie-woogie, jazz waltz and funk to pensive, rhapsodic jazz/classical ballads. The release continues Doerrfeld’s plan to deliver recordings of all of his published piano works with “A Passing Moment” representing “Doerrfeld Piano Works Volume 1″. A 68 page printed and bound musical score of all works on the album is immediately available for purchase along with CD and MP3 formats of the album at www.BillDoerrfeld.com/store/. The image is a new Hubble Space Telescope deep space photo showing a mountain of dust and gas rising in the Carina Nebula. NASA describes the physics behind this image as follows: “The top of a three-light-year tall pillar of cool hydrogen is being worn away by the radiation of nearby stars, while stars within the pillar unleash jets of gas that stream from the peaks.”

The colors are not articifial. They are as close to reality as can be represented. The process of obtaining the images involves snapping multiple black-and-white photos with different color filters and then merging these together in Photoshop.

In the future I plan to professionally notate and publish early classical piano works of mine. While attending Eastman School of Music in the early 1980s I composed a collection of Toccatas and Etudes for piano. Here is an recording made at an Eastman School of Music recital in 1984 with me performing my Etude #3.

This piece is challenging to execute properly as it utilizes the sustenuto pedal (middle pedal on a grand piano) to capture sustained bass lines while both hands fervently drive a choppy shuffle rhythym above. Eventually the full damper pedal is allowed to enter the texture of the piece helping to fill out the sound. The shuffle rhythm continues unabated in both loud climax and soft introspective sections. In the end we shout the shuffle with interspersed tritone/perfect 5ths triple runs from one extreme of the piano to the other leading to a final slam at the close.

Here’s a recording of Bill Doerrfeld performing Etude #3 May 26, 2011
